The task of Robotex 2007 Print

The robots compete in a combined field that consists of passing the obstacle course and rope climbing.

The Task

The robot has to:

  • 1. start from the initial position (see Drawing 1, ROBOT);
  • 2. find the tip of the rope (see Drawing 2, D);
  • 3. climb up the rope until the mark at 2.45 m (see Joonis 2, E);
  • 4. stand at least 5 seconds in contact with the mark E.

The robot that reaches the mark E with the fastest time or climbs the highest (if none of the robot reaches the top) is the winner.

The Competition Field

1. The competition field is a rectangle of 100x300 cm and it is surrounded by a grey frame formed by sewer pipes with diameter of 11 cm.

a) Note to contestants: since the link of connecting the pipes is a few millimetres thicker than the pipes, the pipe may not touch the floor at every point.

2. The ground of the competition field is the floor of the assembly room of TUT. It is a parquet floor.

3. There is a joist over the field. To the joist a rope made of hemp fibre is attached with diameter of 2.5 cm (neutral colour).

4. There is a black metal circlet (iron etc. ferromagnetic substance) with the width of 2 cm attached to the end of the rope (see Drawing 2, D). The end of the rope is not higher from the ground than 5 cm.

5. There is a 10 cm wide strip with the colour of foil attached to the rope at the height of 245 cm (see Drawing 2, E) that is the mark which the robot must be in contact with.

6. There is at least 20 cm of rope between the foil strip and the joist where the rope is attached.

7. There are 4 red bricks placed on the competition field (25x12x6.5 cm). The bricks are placed so that they touch the barrier of the field with their shorter side (see the striped area on drawing 1). The definite location of the bricks will be determined in the morning of the competition day and the location remains the same throughout the competition with all the competitors.

8. The bricks will not be placed in the field of the starting area on the 75 cm long area nor on the field that is on the other side of the field (net side).

9. All measurements connected with the competition field are given with 100% accuracy.

Acquirements To The Robots

1. The robot is fully an autonomous machine that carries its own power source, motion mechanisms, and its own control and check systems.

2. Any kind of communication with participants during the attempt is forbidden.

3. The robot cannot be dangerous to the teams, judges, or the spectators.

4. It is forbidden to use combustion engines.

5. Any kind of linear measurement of the robot (including the diagonal etc.) cannot be longer than 50 cm throughout the competition. If this requirement is not followed, the judges have the right to add extra time to the competition time of the robot or disqualify the robot.

6. The robot must consist of one part. In the case of the parts being detached from the robot accidentally, the judges may allow the robot to continue.

7. The robots cannot damage the competition field or its parts.

8. The robot cannot intentionally disturb other robots.

9. The robot must have an easily noticeable off switch.

The Competition

1. The representative of the team will place the robot on the starting area (see Drawing 1) in the corner of the competition field. In the starting position, the robot must touch both barriers of the corner (see Drawing 1, B and C).

2. Several robots compete at the same time i.e. the competition fields are located side by side, so that the ropes are attached to the same joist. There may be 4 - 8 competition fields.

3. At the judge's signal, the contestants will activate their robots. If the contestants touch the robot again after the signal without the judge's permission, the results of the last attempt will not be taken into account and there will not be any chance to make a new attempt.

4. The robot with any of its parts cannot cross the imaginary centre line of the barrier of the competition field.

5. The competition time of the robot will be recorded by the judges and it is the time when the robot reaches the mark that is attached to the rope (see Drawing 2, E).

6. When the robot reaches the mark that is attached to the rope at the height of 2.5 meters, the robot has to stop for at least 5 sec. The robot must be in contact with the mark during that time. If this requirement is not fulfilled, the competition time of the robot will be multiplied by 2.

7. After at least a stop of 5 seconds, the judge will give a signal to the representative of the team, after which the representative can remove the robot from the competition field.

8. In case there is no stop of 5 seconds, the representative must ask the judge for permission to remove the robot from the competition field. In this case the judge will note the fact that the robot did not stop in the protocol.

9. The competition is held in preliminary rounds. Every robot has 2 attempts. The final result of the robot will be the result of its best attempt.

10. In case of equal results, there will be additional attempts until different results will be achieved. The results will determine the winner.

11. The maximum competition time in one round is 5 minutes.

12. The pause between the rounds is not longer than 2 minutes.

13. In case the robot does not reach the mark attached on the rope, the judge will determine the maximum height that the robot has achieved with an accuracy of 20 cm. The competition time will not be recorded.

14. Between the robots that achieved the best results during the preliminary rounds there will be a finale that consists of 2 rounds, analogical to the preliminary rounds.

15. The number of robots competing in the finale will be determined by the judges during the ongoing competition according to their level, but it will not exceed the number of the competition fields. The time achieved in the finale will determine the final results of the teams.

16. In case of none of the robots reaching the mark, the height that the robots reached, will determine the final results of the teams.
